Neighborhood opposition for Dock Street DevelopmentTwo Trees has proposed building a large condo unit to replace the now operating neighborhood art and theatre space, St. Ann's Warehouse. They are also suggesting they may get approval for building a new middle school in this proposed 18 story building. The surrounding Neighborhood Associations ( Brooklyn Heights, Fulton Ferry Landing, and DNA) oppose this out-of-scale, high density & historically insensitive development. In 2000, the surrounding community successfully opposed another out-of-scale Two Trees proposed development of this same site.
"this site aims to give supporters of the brooklyn bridge and residents of dumbo a unified voice so that together we can preserve these unique landmarks. please join us in our current fight against dock street dumbo." DNA has represented DUMBO's interests before Community Board 2, Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition, Downtown Brooklyn Waterfront Development Corporation, 84th Precinct Community Council, the Department of City Planning, and local, state and national elected officials. Some of the issues we are concerned with include: DNA is very excited about the revitalization of PS8 and has committed considerable energy and resources to its success. If you are interested in being on a special mailing list to receive updates of events at the school, email . E-mail Chris with . Visit PS8's website (www.ps8pta.org) for this year's schedule of Open Houses and Curriculum nights. Read more. Historic Preservation Through the efforts of DNA and the Historic Districts Council, DUMBO was successfully listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 2000. While a positive first step, the listing neither protects buildings nor a sense of place. Comprehensive protection is only possible through becoming a locally designated historic district. Read more. Film Shoots DUMBO's Belgian block streets, historic industrial character and spectacular waterfront views are a magnet to commercial and feature film production companies, and we experience a large number of film shoots in our neighborhood. DNA has a volunteer Film Liaison who works with the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting to monitor shoots and to try to minimize inconveniences to residents. Here's how you can help: if you see flyers from a production company, write down the contact number and e-mail us at . It's crucial to contact production companies before they begin filming. Some of the things we'll ask for include: reserved parking only for production vehicles; vouchers if significant street parking is taken away; generators and craft service vehicles to be placed away from residential buildings; and black-out curtains to be made readily available in the event of night shoots. Film production in our streets brings money into the community but too often it feels more like an invasion. Now, we have won a respite from this onslaught. Transportation Issues In case you haven't noticed, DUMBO is a maze of hard-to-navigate streets. DNA is lobbying the Department of Transportation and our elected officials on such issues as arbitrary street closings and reopening the Water Street underpass at Anchorage Place. In addition, we've requested additional parking on Plymouth and Bridge Streets and all-way stop signs at the intersections of Front and Pearl and Front Street and York Streets. We have also requested that traffic flow in DUMBO be included in the Environmental Impact Study for Brooklyn Bridge Park. Please email with any questions regarding transportation issues. |
